Molds and how they trigger allergies Spring showers and storms increase the amount of mold found inside and outside homes. Along with pollens from trees, grasses, and weeds, molds are an important trigger of allergic rhinitis, affecting over 40 million Americans, according to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (AAAAI). Mold spores contain potent allergens, which are otherwise innocuous substances that the immune system of some individuals recognizes, resulting in an inflammatory response. Exposure to molds may trigger an allergic reaction causing sneezing, nasal stuffiness, headaches, eye irritation, wheezing, and coughing. Molds are microscopic organisms that are everywhere. Large infestations of mold can usually be seen or smelled, they look like furry growth, black stains or specks of black, white, orange, green and brown on surfaces. They may be brought indoors with clothing, shoes and soils. Mold needs a warm environment and moisture to grow. Where can mold be found? Inside houses • Near windows and air conditioning vents, because of condensation. • Under sinks, in the kitchen and bathroom. • Near leaky pipes, and sometimes visible on walls. Outside houses • Near heavy vegetation, especially if there is wood in decay. • Near hay or straw • In piles of leaves or grass What can be done? Repair leaking roof and pipes Maintain a low level of humidity in your home (between 35-40 percent). Consider using a de-humidifier to remove moisture, if necessary Use water, detergent and 5% bleach to clean the mold on washable surfaces Use exhaust fans in the bathroom and wipe down the shower after use Remove visible mold on carpeting or wallpaper Your doctor can evaluate your symptoms and help you determine if they are caused by mold and work with you to develop a plan to avoid the allergens that trigger your symptoms.

Food Allergies and Summer Activities Most people would rather not know what goes into the corn-dog they consume at the summer festival, but for the 12 million Americans with food allergies, awareness of ingredients is a must for safely eating their way through summer events, according to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (AAAAI). A single bite of the wrong food can induce anaphylaxis, a life-threatening reaction, in severely allergic people. The AAAAI estimates that up to 150 people die each year from anaphylaxis caused by food allergy. There are many questions about ingredients, preparations and possible cross-contamination that if left unanswered could lead to an allergic reaction. More commonly, allergic reactions to food result in skin irritation, asthma symptoms or gastrointestinal upset. But even mild symptoms can quickly spoil the fun of a summer festival, ball game or wedding. Consider these tips to avoid a serious allergic reaction to food: 1) Diagnose and confirm your allergies Visit your doctor to confirm your allergic sensitivity. This is helpful to avoid unnecessary diets, because some reactions to foods are not allergic but due to other causes. 2) Dont dare, Don't try the food you are allergic to, even if there has not been an adverse reaction for many years. 3) Ask about ingredients And how the food was prepared, for possible risk of cross-contamination. Communicate your allergies 4) Read food labels It is important for people with food-allergies to carefully read all food labels. 5) Consider bringing your own food 6) Be prepared for emergencies Anaphylactic reactions caused by food allergies can be life-threatening. Carry self-injectable epinephrine at all times. The diagnosis of food allergy is commonly done by skin testing. In this procedure, a small drop of a food extract is placed on the top layer of the skin and then it is gently scratched using a plastic device. The site develops an itchy bump within 20 min if the person is allergic to the food. An alternative test is to draw a blood sample and measure the presence of a marker (IgE) of allergic sensitivity for a specific food.
