It’s very hard to find legit tonkatsu in Chicago and I was craving the dish after recently spending two weeks in Tokyo. Katsu-shack has a pork tonkatsu on the menu that is an attempt of the dish, but it was sadly not very good. The breading was not tight to the pork and fell off immediately on all pieces. The cutlet was drier and overcooked than hoped. The tonkatsu sauce was acidic, way too overpowered by soy sauce, and not thick enough. Wow! I was surprised by the beautiful crisp of my really tender and juicy chicken! And the curry was delicious. Definitely going to tell everyone to come get katsu here!!
I got my food to go but it was delicious, the tonkatsu was perfectly cooked and juicy, the black curry was savory and in general this is a great place. I placed 4 stars for service and atmosphere because it's largely human interaction free which I don't love, particularly if you have questions about what comes with the sets. Will have to try the katsu-sando next time.
