Jana is an excellent teacher. She listened to us carefully and thoughtfully gave us suggestions. Our class took us back to the basics, which helped me identify and correct several errors plaguing my watercolor practice. She was kind, insightful and generous. I highly recommend any class she teaches.

I have been taking watercolor lessons with Jana in her Yellow Couch Classroom for a year. She offers many different types of opportunities to study under her -- from local one day options to week-long out of town retreats. It can be intimidating to join a group of artists who have been painting together for some time and who have developed their practices, but Jana and the rest of the classroom are welcoming, non-judgmental, and encouraging. On 3/24 I was furloughed and for the first time in 5 years I was home for more than just 6 days a month! I started by doing all the little projects I wanted to get done but that went quick! I decided to start painting rocks to give to essential workers but I wasn’t very good so that led me to watercolor! I still was horrible but found it entertaining! I have known and collected Jana’s work for years. She is possibly the most dedicated artist I know, to her craft, to her students, and to her values as a perpetual learner. Her pieces meld a sense of place geographically, a high dedication to detail, along with touches of whimsy. It is a delight to have her work in my home and office. Laurel J.

Jana educates me, both in art and in life. When she teaches a technique, she teach the “why” and how it “feels” — i.e., how does it “feel” to move a bead of water across the paper, versus a dry brush on the paper. She uses stories of moments from her own life to encourage us in our journey of making art, helping us understand why it’s hard at time, why there may be setbacks, but how to keep going and never give up. I love her classes.
