When Gibby and Bessie Gibbs bought the Island Hotel in 1946, Bessie concentrated her efforts on the dining room and quickly established the hotel restaurant as the place to come for seafood. Having very high standards, the seafood, vegetables and other ingredients used in food preparation, had to be fresh. The seafood was often just off the boat and the vegetables fresh from the garden. We did enjoy a night of live music in the courtyard. It was a delightful night listening to a wonderful duo and meeting lots of new friends. Another must stop when in Cedar Creek! 🤩
This hotel was probably the highlight of our trip to Cedar Key. The hotel is central, though the island is very small and walkable throughout. The hotel itself and rooms were very cute! It is very old and the only caution I would give is for possibly those who are less mobile, because the tub was very high off of the ground and it was difficult to control the hot water at first, so I would be a little concerned there. The clam appetizer was delicious. My husband's crab bisque was great. I ordered the snapper piccata. I have never had to use a knife to cut fish. It was rubbery. I thought maybe it was just the outside edges but the inside was dry. As this dish was $32, I did send it back. I expected an appropriately cooked fish for $32. We were informed they would charge us for the side salad which had already been eaten; $10 for a little lettuce, a couple tomatoes and cucumbers.
