I have been studying with Ishigure Sensei since 2011and I highly reccommend her to the musician or apprentence whom is serious about studying Koto or Shamisen, She is very helpful and knowledgeable about good practicing and performing skills and ettiquite. I have been taking Koto lessons over 23 years from Masayo Ishigure Sensei. She has taught me many aspects of music as well as being a good koto player. She has been giving us many occasions to perform. I believe one of the keys to become a good musician; you need to perform a lot in front of people. Just for example the last year alone, we performed 5 different Cherry Blossom festival occasions in New York City area as a “Miyabi Koto and Shamise ensemble” group.

I have taken 4 other koto teachers’ classes before Masayo’s. I’v never had so many chances to perform in front of an audience with those past teachers. Masayo loves to bring her students to join her ensemble group and to let them play on big stages. Her passion and her great teaching skill surely raise my enthusiasm for koto.

Masayo Ishigure is a virtuoso musician that has mastered not one, but two instruments. She has a deep love for the art form, as well as expanding the capabilities of the instruments she teaches. I've been studying with her for ten years, and she has always been a great teacher. However, as like anything else, if you don't put in any time to practicing, you won't get very far. I took classes with Masayo for approximately 6 months and the class is not lenient for hobby learners. Practicing with a large musical instrument in a NYC apartment is not always feasible, which annoyed the teacher. You will also need to track your own payments and class schedule carefully because there is no formal system in place, and the instructor often mistakes class dates earlier agreed upon.
