The layout and looks of the building are great; it fits the theme of the other buildings on the oval especially. However, as a music student, the practice rooms are atrocious in the summer; with no AC or insulated windows temperatures in practice rooms can be up to ten degrees hotter than outdoors.

Historic Hughes Hall, constructed in 1949, is named o Royal D. Hughes, a Professor and Chairperson of the Music Department for a number of years. The building consolidated much of the School of Music from the various spaces it occupied across the University campus into one core building. Currently, the SOM occupies Hughes, Weigel Hall, parts of the Mershon Auditorium building, and the Marching band annex. Hughes Hall is home to the faculty studios for voice, brass, strings, musicology, music theory and composition, band, and music education. In addition, this building houses all classrooms for music, the 300-seat Hughes Recital Hall, and 46 practice studios.
