I took money out of my IRA and then put more than that amount back in within about a month. I thought this would satisfy the IRA rules so that I wouldn’t be taxed. The source of the payback money I used didn’t qualify for the “no tax” rule, and H&R Block didn’t ask me the source, so claimed I owed $0. A year and a half later the IRS charged me the tax plus nearly $2000 in penalty and interest. H&R Block refuses to be responsible for the mistake and won’t pay me back for the penalty and interest.
