Hotel Grinnell is an adaptive reuse of the old junior high school in downtown Grinnell. The building was erected in 1921 as an addition to the high school, with three stories of classrooms, a large gymnasium and an auditorium. The high school was torn down in 1980, but the newer junior high was saved and remodeled into a community center that housed various offices. Everything about the hotel is absolutely lovely. As a previous public school teacher I absolutely adored the school theme throughout, including fun and unique touches such as chalk boards, and report cards with number two pencils. The room I was in was beautiful, clean, and very comfortable. The amenities, including the huge game room and included refrigerator full of cold beverages, plus the bowl of snacks, were fantastic. We loved this hotel! It’s so unique and clever. The entire hotel was super clean including our room. The front desk guy was very helpful and kind as were the wait staff in the restaurant. We walked around and checked out the unique areas and found it to be delightful. Coffee in the room was not that great but other than that, everything was awesome. Definitely recommend!
I have stayed here a half dozen times. It is convenient, but otherwise unremarkable. The food and service at the periodic table is great sometimes and not so great other times.
