An absolute highlight of my Amtrak trip across the country. I stumbled upon Honey Island tours through an expansive Reddit forum listing do’s and dont’s in NOLA area and I had the most amazing experience kayaking through one of the last fully preserved bayous in the country. Mike was lovely and picked me up from my hostel in NOLA, Jess was a fantastic guide, knowledgeable about just about anything bayou. Fantastic experience! Our morning started off with Mike picking us up from our hotel in the downtown area. Smooth process and nice to be able to sit back and relax on the way to the river. When we arrived, we found out we were the only ones to book our time slot and ended up having a private tour! Jess was awesome - super knowledgeable about the plants and animals in the area and talked about a few conservation projects she’s working on. Our family of 4 (kids 13 and 11) had a great time with Jessica. It was really neat paddling with the water level so low and seeing the Bald Cypress trees and knees everywhere. Jessica had tons of knowledge about them including her personal experience with some researchers. Weather was too cold for alligators, but we saw tons of birds including a yellow one only seen in this area and an osprey flying into its next. Several snakes too. This was the hidden gem I was hoping to find! The hosts are helpful, knowledgeable, and hilarious, making the tour incomparably special. Best way to experience the swamp!
Amazing Kayak tour from a truly knowledgeable local guide. Jess and Mike know everything there is to know about this little gem of an ecosystem. Get out of the city next time you’re I the New Orleans area. You won’t regret booking with them.
