DON'T DO IT!!! I Had a back surgery by Dr. Oya over a year ago. He nicked my spinal cord and cut nerves. I can hardly walk now and I live in extreme pain every day. Go anywhere but the U of I. I was treated very terrible.
Oya did an L5-S1 fusion on me in 2019, i think! Why do i say that? Because I did not see him before the surgery or after the surgery. My daily physician checks were done by 7-13 (a crowd) people, and by the 3rd day, still in extreme pain, i screamed get out and i wanted my doctor. That still didnt happen. I was in the hospital for a week because they could not get my pain under control. Upon going home, I had to go back to their ER twice due to extreme pain Worse experience. I will NEVER go back to UI Hospital for anything.
Dr Oya placed a spinal cord stimulator in my neck and within 3 days it moved completely off of the nerves it was supposed to sit on. Because of this, I had to have a more extensive 2nd surgery 3 months later. He secured the stimulator this time but not in the right spot. During the trial for the stimulator I had about 80% relief. After 2 surgeries with Dr. Oya, I only get about 25% relief. He did not exhibit any empathy for what I went through and basically washed his hands of me and sent me to the pain clinic. Dr Hiroyuki Oya is the best! Following a MAJOR car accident (T-boned) I was seen/cared for by Dr. Oya. I had multiple vertebral fractures, broken ribs, pelvic bone, sternum, arm and leg bones were broken. I am now walking proof of his knowledge and expertise. He is a superb and caring physician.
He was the surgeon for my frontal lobe craniotomy and did a great job. He has good bedside manner during pre and post visits. Answered all of my questions throughly and I went into my surgery without any questions. I am very glad that he was my surgeon. It is also very obvious that he has a very thorough understanding of the brain.
