Get directionsGreat free camp site. No water and not ideal for tents but it did the job for us. The walk around the petroglyphs is easy and you can see a lot.
Hickson Petroglyph Recreation Area has several rock wall petroglyphs within a .6 mile hike. Two of the three are quite large and amazing! There are several other hiking loops from a different parking lot ranging from 3.5 to 6.5 miles. It's is a beautiful Pinyon pine/Juniper habitat area with lots of cliffs and boulders. The campground is small, has pit toilets, and no water. There are only a few spots that you can bring a 30' trailer in and they are rather overgrown.
Easy to find off Highway 50, this is a nice place to catch a break from driving. There is a campground, basic restrooms, and covered picnic tables. A short hiking trail takes you past rock ledges with petroglyphs, as well as out to a nice overlook. The petroglyphs are not the greatest, as the sandstone there is quite soft and worn, not to mention the abundant, more modern graffiti.
Such a good place to visit
Nice stop over for a road trip, especially if you have kids. Free but limited access for big rigs. Short trails to interesting views and petroglyphs. Pit toilets, no water.
