Charming and exceptionally artifact-dense railroad museum run largely by a dedicated group of volunteers. There is a LOT to see. In the 2 hours I was there, I think we just scratched the surface. Gary spent a lot of time showing me through, and his explanations were fascinating. I was intrigued by his descriptions of how they obtained so many of their display cases that were otherwise destined for the trash. Looks like a fun museum, however we showed up and they were closed. It was during advertised hours, just wasn't sure if it was due to heat or Labor Day weekend.
Such a cool little piece of Kansas history! Heartlands Railroad Museum is definitely worth stopping at, especially if you’re already visiting Big Brutus. I loved seeing the old locomotives, railroad equipment, and memorabilia and learning how closely the railroads were connected to the coal-mining industry in this area. A great stop for anyone who loves history, trains, or old machinery!
Such a great museum. Admission is donation based. Great railroad memorabilia inside, and so many trains and railroad buildings outside, many of which you go inside of. It’s very close to Big Brutus, and a perfect day trip to go to both!
Nice train museum with focus on local history. Guided tours by railroad enthusiast was an unexpected bonus.
