Lower East Side classic. Olympic-size pool is the main draw—huge, free, packed in summer. Recreation center has a tiny gym, ping pong, pool tables for cheap membership. Beaux-Arts building is pretty. Pool water's murky sometimes, locker rooms rough. Gets wild on weekends. Part of the neighborhood.
Visiting a prison will give you a similar experience just without the water.
