Hakata Sushi

3.8

About this business

Established in 1970, this one has never tried to reinvent itself into a trendy hot spot that so many sushi bars fall victim to. Flavor and fun have always been the top priorities here and it shows. Try the spicy tuna roll or a tasty rainbow roll made with some of the freshest fish in the city. Right on the corner of Wilshire and Yale, this place is centrally located to be considered the perfect neighborhood hangout. The crowd is full of locals who don't want to pose, but just want a good roll in a friendly atmosphere.

Have been coming to Hakata for over 30 yrs. through several owners. This place has been on a steady decline. Dinner time still seems to be okay. But the last 2 times over the last month lunch time has had sub-par sushi. Today however the quality and the cleanliness of Hakata was equal to a back alley gutter. There was old guy who I had never seen before behind the sushi bar, who was cleaning the boards and the bins, and when he went to take fill our order did not wash his hands. We then ordered tuna & yellowtail sushi. The t... read more

We have lived in SF for the past 10 years and are both well experienced at EVERY sushi resturant the city has to offer and on a hunch we went to HAKATA and now - Riki has ruined us. We can only have his sushi the way he makes it. His Lobster special - the spider roll - the stuff he picks up off the floor - all good and all worth the drive!!! We read a bogus review that said he left and we almost cried - do not be fooled. Riki is the best and we are planning another road-trip in a few months just to go again!!!

I always take my family, friends, and coworkers to Hakata. It has easy parking in the back and casual spacious interior. You can drop by with friends for a drink at the sports bar, eat a meal with family at the tables, or take a date to the sushi bar. The sushi men are talented and fun, you can tell they love what they do. Manager is always working to improve the restaurant and is very acessible to suggestions/query. Most importantly, it has excellent food! Fresh fish, scrumptious rolls, other great dishes. Try the Rikkis lo... read more

With all the neighborhood sushi bars, Ive been coming here since 1976 and they still have the best quality, largest slices and most creative rolls and special dishes. Tornado & Volcano are 2 very special ones to try and their toro is always superb. Try Rikis roll and let him create for you. Very friendly and they remember you...and theyre all into sports so the plasma tv is always cooking!

First and foremost, the staff at Hakata are amazing. Go there twice and they will know you by name - go there five times and youre practically family. As far as the Sushi is concerned, it is outstanding. In my opinion, Hakata serves better quality food at much more palatable prices than say, the highly lauded and super-trendy Sushi Roku, where the bill can often be astronomical and the food, as well as the attitude of the staff, underwhelming. The atmosphere at Hakata is pure Sports Bar - not necessarily my favorite ambience, ... read more
