Beautiful Hair Friend recently went there and came out looking amazing. They do a wonderful job and make sure everything is just perfect. Prices are very competitive and recommend to many.

Shear Genius – Without question this is the best salon that I?ve ever been too. Being African American, our choices of quality hair salons are limited, especially in NY. When I called for an appointment they were very professional and helpful. Although they are currently under renovations, it does NOT inconvenience the customers in any way. When I arrived to my appointment, Walter (the senior stylist) was already waiting for me! I told Walter that I wanted a touch-up relaxer and a cut and after examining my hair, he immediately got to work. I have never had a perm worked through so thoroughly before. He moved quickly so that my scalp wouldn?t burn, but he also made sure that the chemicals were placed properly so that my hair wouldn?t be over processed. The shampoo was great and felt more like a massage. He cut my hair while it was wet, which I?ve never had done before. After setting me in rollers, and placing me under the dyer, I was back in his chair. Once he removed the rollers he used a hand-held dryer and a round brush to smooth the hair. He then went back into my hair to cut layers. He didn?t put too many products in my hair, which would have weighed it down. Besides the leave-in conditioner, the only other thing he used was a serum to calm a few fly-aways. Also he didn?t use a flat iron! I didn't have to worry about smelling of burnt hair. Walter created perfection without excess heat?. I have never had so much body in my hair before. I shook my hair every which way and because it was such a great cut, the hair fell right back into place. I felt the quality of my cut could compare to any of the top Caucasian salons in the area. Walter stresses the importance of healthy hair so if you?re looking for a gelled up, colored up style typical of lower class salons, then this is not the place for you. They will not compromise the integrity of your hair! My hair was simply chic and young which is what I wanted. I was left feeling EXTREMELY satisfied.

Long waits, poor styling and doesn't understand client needs – I found out about HBJ when I saw a women who's hair I liked a year ago when I first moved to New York. I since went there on 3 separate occasions with appointments with Walter: 2x for touch ups and 1x for color. All three times I was disappointed in the time it took for me to be taken for my appointment. The waits each time were over 1 hour and each time there were profuse apologies saying, "It's not always like this" or "Try booking on a weekday." HBJ instead should not be greedy and not overbook their stylists - a major problem with many black salons. Why is it that white women are able to go in and out of a salon, also for chemical treatments, without having to wait hours on end? We got to do better! When booking appointments I thought it was odd that they didn't take down my information - something I had grown accustomed to at similarly priced salons. Also, they don't do hair files on their clients to track their needs and treatments. Another sign of poor client care. Regarding actual services rendered, the relaxer did straighten my hair, but the styling was too old fashioned - I'm 27 years old and I've walked out of there with bouffants even after showing pictures of how I want my hair styled. For my color treatment, I had to leave the next day to see my fiance who lives overseas and stressed to Walter the color I was looking for and that I needed a noticeable change of color in my hair. $200+ and 4 hours later my hair was virtually the same color. My fiance, who had paid for the color, was ticked off. Walter explained that color is damaging, but I've had color before (healthily) and have seen black women with similar texture hair that's colored so I didn't understand why he assured me my hair would be noticeably lighter when it wasn't. This was the last straw and I would not recommend coming here in the future. Additionally, the salon has been under construction for over a year and is a very uncomfortable experience. Your money is better spent elsewhere.

My Hair is in the best condition EVER!!! – I have never had long hair! Until I started going to Joe's about 3-4 yrs ago. I have always wore weaves but I was tired of the up keep. I started with damaged short hair when I started going to Evette, and today my hair is down my back, thick and healthy. They are more expensive but they also focus more on HAIR CARE, so if you just want a hard stiff look to last for hrs go some where else. If you want hair thats soft, healthy and easy to manage on your own then go to Joe's. I don't like my hair over styled or too many hair products. I always have people stop me to ask about my hair, but I tell them, I don't do much to it any more, I let my stylist take care of it. It has worked and I trust them. I also visit the Dominicans on those broke days but only for basic service, they do too much heat damage trying to get my hair bone straight and it ends up looking thin and limp. Thats not for me, I like thick hair. Give Hair by Joe a try! Other great (oh and fine ;) stylist there are- Walter, Lil Joe, and Clarence!

Good haircut but too expensive – Would recommend as there are so few black hair salons in Manhattan...however, must say it is very pricey and cut is not entirely worth the price.

Joseph's Is the Best Black Hair Salon- Family Own!!!! – I have been a customer of Joseph's Hair Salon for years and they do the best hair care there. It's family owned and they use the best products on your hair. It can be pricer than the normal local hair shop but you pay for what you get. The service is impeciable. I go to Walter he is one of the best there and lil Joe and Bill and Kimmy they are all EXCELLENT, Clarence too. I know the entire family. You will not be disappointed. I have traveled all the way from Westchester County to go there and my Sister lives all the way in Virginia to go to Joseph's. This is the best, upscale, hair salon! If you are looking for hair care and want your hair to grow successfuly this is the place to go!!!!!

Pretty Solid – I've been going to Josephs for years. It's great because everyone leaves there with incredibly shiny and gorgeous looking hair, which is perfect if you are going to an event that night. However, in my experience (and I've had my hair done by multiple stylists and this outcome has been the same) the style just doesn't last as long as other places I've gone. Its like the potion they use for all that shine and glamour also makes your hair more susceptible to teeny drops of rain or the slightest humidity. Nevertheless, I still go there because they are good and they get you in and out there quickly (may take a bit longer on Saturdays, but never anything too extreme). I go to Clarence--he's awesome and the fastest! Yvette is S-L-O-W, but she's good. But I'm not lying when I say she is ridiculously slow moving, setting, washing--everything! If you're looking for weekly wash and sets and you are a recent grad or something (in other words--no dough!), I recommend Betty's on 132nd Street and Lenox...it's a Dominican place that's does a wash and set for $12 and they do a decent job. Don't know if I'd get a perm, color or anything else there though. Good luck!

best hair salon for african american women NYC – I just recently relocated from Washington DC and of course was nervous about finding a salon. In prepartion I asked my former salon [Bill Lawerence salon---fantastic by the way for those of you going to DC---in Adams Morgan] who I should look into. Without hesitation they suggested Hair Styling by Joseph and mentioned a stylist named "Walter". On my first visit I instead got a stylist named Ali who was great! I was sooo impressed with her knowledge of hair care and maintenance AND the fact that she could tell I had been going to a good salon in DC just by studying my hair!!! Yes, its pricey, but it was very similar to what I paid in DC...I highly recommend this salon, relaxed atmosphere, professional staff and clientele...and down the street from Bloomingdales! Who can beat that? :]

Great Hair Cut – I highly recommend this salon. A bit pricy but worth every penny. My stylist, Walter, gave me a funky cut that I was not expecting. I walked in uncertain and I thought I was only going to get a shape up but instead I got a chic cut that I have received many compliments on. Both men and women have complimented men on the new look.
