I wouldn’t recommend this tour if you’re looking for a serious and informative history experience. Unfortunately, neither my family nor I enjoyed it. One of the main issues was the language barrier—it was difficult to understand the guide, which made it hard to stay engaged. Additionally, the guide tended to focus more on joking around than actually sharing meaningful historical content. We booked this tour because we were interested in learning about Gullah history and culture. The name of this tour is very misleading. This is a traditional Charleston History Tour and some black history mixed in. The tour guide seemed to be nice, however there was a strong language barrier, which left us a bit frustrated because we couldn't follow what he was telling us. If you go on this tour, just do not expect significant Gullah History. We ended our tour early and got off when we saw we were near our hotel.
Alfonse is proud of his family history and Charleston. He is enthusiastic about both. He is entertaining and insightful. Well worth the time spent.
I really appreciate Alfonso historical knowledge of his Gullah ancestors and City. I enjoyed the bus route tour. He is truly a teacher full of wisdom. I would highly recommend this tour. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Keep up the good work.
