Words are inadequate to express my gratitude to A. J. Spiess at Granville County Veterans Services for all of his assistance! I began the application process to get my grandfather’s, John Hupage Bridges, military headstone removed and replaced in May of this year. The headstone had been placed in 1946, and the wording had faded. A. J. went above and beyond to find a funeral home in Oxford that would remove and replace the headstone in order to complete the application process. Going to Granville VSO was a life changing experience for me. I had gathered up records and military papers hoping I could qualify to get DIC from late husband. I sat down with. A.J. Spiess and he listened to my story and asked me questions and said he would try to help. I left it in his hands, but thinking that I probably would not have a good outcome. Seven months later I received word from the VA that I was approved!! I received a check for burial expenses and a check for back payments. Regular check begins in November. I... read more

After several months of trying to reach a VSO in this office previously, I was never able to reach anyone or get a return call. I recently met AJ at the Butner Armory pop up Vet Fair and he has been awesome helping me navigate the benefits, some that I was not aware of. If there was something he did not know, he researched and called back!
