The first known bricks date back to around 7,500 BC. They were found in the Upper Tigris region of southeastern Turkey, and were made from sun-dried mud.

Ruins excavated at Comalcalco, Mexico have revealed the earliest fired brick structures in the New World. Built between 200-1300 AD, the site consists of a complex of temples, palaces, buildings, and tombs constructed using bricks inscribed with animals, people, letters, and symbols.
