Had stained wall to wall carpet in our finished basement that needed pretty aggressive cleaning. I tried renting a carpet cleaner from the local big box home center. Then I used a steam cleaner to try and soften and scrub the stain away. Went over the spots again with the rented carpet cleaner. End result - carpet looked worse as if the cleaner deposited mud on the carpet. Called the Carpet Cleaning Group who came to the rescue without delay and improved the appearance 10 fold, at least.
