History Established in 1944. In 1936, President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the Rural Electric Administration to provide a means for rural residents to "light up their lives". In the fall of 1944, a group of rural families explored the possibility of bringing electric service to outlying areas of Highlands, Glades, Okeechobee and Hendry Counties.
