Access to the Appalachian Trail is worth the trip.
Gathland State Park is a beautiful historic site perfect for a family outing in nature. The park offers trails branching in three directions, providing plenty of variety for hikers. For a scenic loop, head North on the Appalachian Trail, take your first right onto the blue-blazed trail, and make a final right turn near the water source to complete the circuit. Ample parking on both sides Picnic shelter, driving water faucet, restroom. I have found the restrooms are occasionally closed, but there were potter potty.
