About this business

Freemans Sporting Club began with a group of friends playing pool and drinking whiskey while sitting above the Freemans restaurant. Taavo Somer, their leader launched his own line of menswear in 2004, and by default named it Freemans Sporting Club. This line deals exclusively with hand-tailored clothes. They are built to be durable and can be worn daily. These classically-styled clothes stand the test of time. What a Dissappointment – They didn't listen to what I wanted, "keep the length just clean it up, I'm growing it for fall" - simple instructions for beard and hair but he was too concerned with his cellphone and looking at his watch. Never again!

Great Haircut – I have always been skeptical about getting my haircut away from home (Baltimore) since I moved but I came here and was very satisfied. Anyone looking i would recommend this place.

Best cut on the east coast – I have had a lot of haircuts in my travels but this one was yet the best cut I have ever gotten. The barbers name was Jason. He took his time and focused on the details and shape of my head.He didn't talk much but damn sure can cut hair. I received nothing but coments for the next 2 weeks. The atmosphere was great and the other barbers were funny as hell,I had a great experience!

The Emperor's New (Poorly Made) Clothes – Granted the over-all styling of Freeman's Sporting Club is pretty sharp. Masculine, seeded with vintage and maintaining an undeniable level of snobbery that may even make someone feel special to be there...BUT the quality of craftsmanship is just poor. I purchased three "Brooklyn made" dress shirts all 3 of which lost their buttons during the first wearing! (Not even laundered yet) When I brought them back in to explain, I was met with the most arrogant of attitudes. The nerve of me ... read more

Terrible cut – I bought the hype, and shelled out the extra $40 clams for a cut here a while back. It was a terrible mistake. Didn't give me the cut I wanted, and it looked retarded. I had to get it fixed at the cheaper barber a week later. Avoid the hype.

Believe the Hype – I just returned from the new FSC outpost on Horatio St. and it lived up to the billing. The way people talk about it you'd think going there was akin to frat plege party, military initialion or a cotillion. Nothing is further from the truth. Just like any great bar, confidence, manners and a good communiction will get you everywhere here. Granted it was a world-class crisp fall day, I happended to be somewhat well out together in non-vintage bty(save my 1930's heirloom Elgin watch with a band by Jutta Neum... read more

Freemans Sporting Club, 8 Rivington St – I've been 3 times now, 3 different "stylists" 3 completely different haircuts. None of which I asked for. I gave a general idea of what I wanted and expected a little advice, I got a few nods and platitudes and then each one proceded to cut my hair either haphazardly with no shape or style or too short and basic. Why did I go back 3 times? Basically the hype! I convinced myself that they knew what they were doing. Wrong. I won't be making the same mistake again. The staff are friendly... read more

I Finally Found Shorty – It took 3 years of looking for a good barber in NYC. I finally found him! My co-worker spoke highly of his Barber Shorty at Freemans barbershop, I had heard other friends talk about their barber Shorty, so I decided to give it a try. I was very happy with the cut. He seemed to know exactly what I wanted done, with very little explanation. If you are in search of a great haircut go see Shorty at Freeman's Barbershop.

cool clothes, hot staff, great space, savvy barbers – this place is the best. i've been getting my hair cut at freemans for over a year now. the barbers know what they're doing. i've gotten a cut from nearly all of them. shorty is great, van's got great hands, ivan's the man, there's a rather odd gent with a very impressive moustache who gives great shaves, joey's very good. they also have some very nice products, "sutlery" as they call them. nice one chaps, great stuff.
