The pulp and paper industry pollutes air, water, and soil. This paper mill plant (before conversion and then closure in 2019) spewed highly toxic waste - hydrogen sulfides, sodium sulfide, methyl mercaptan, sulfur, and chlorine dioxide - all over Ottawa area. The Thurso area itself is badly polluted as a result.
Went through the city on my bike, I presume people living there got used to this smell...
