Cool old time bridge. Got to see it swing open multiple time while visiting Fort Madison. Even got to sit in traffic waiting on the bridge. My kids loved it as well.

The bridge being closed intermenterly and when it is open a person doesn't know if they are charging toll or is it a free toll day. This makes it very difficult for people to navigate from Iowa to Illinois it has become more than a nuisance it's plain ludicrous to not keep the public informed. And don't try to call the railroad they don't know and give vague and are oblivious to the fact that the bridge is having problems. If you need to traverse from Nauvoo to Fort Madison, your two options are either driving around for an hour via Burlington or Keokuk, or taking this bridge. If you're lucky, it'll be open. They close it at random junctions, and seem to discriminate against the local populous, especially on the Illinois side. For example, the bridge closed for the entirety of July, when Nauvoo tourism was at its peak, but opened for the weekend for the Fort Madison rodeo. Their maintenance is frequent. A wait to get over the bridge by passenger rail, but great views of the mighty Mississippi!
