Aquatic plants do more than add to the aesthetic appeal of your aquarium. Just like their land-based cousins, they contribute to the oxygen content, cleanliness to the water, and provide camouflage for some of the shyer members of the tank.
Be careful not to confuse granular activated carbon with ordinary charcoal. Charcoal is less expensive, but is also much less effective at chemical filtration than granular activated carbon.
Even an aquarium novice knows not to stock males and females of a species if they don’t want to raise fish, but for some types of fish, adding more than a single male to the tank can lead to a problem. Some aggressive fish, such as Cichlids, will fight with one another to establish dominance.
Reverse osmosis water may seem like the purest water to use in aquariums, but it is actually too pure for fish. This water is completely void of minerals and micronutrients which naturally occur in drinking water, and because it is so pure it is subject to big swings in pH levels.
It can be a freshwater tank or a saltwater tank, and you can have a few fish or a lot, but no matter what, you want them to have the best and cleanest habitat possible. Fortunately, aquarium experts know how to make sure any aquarium is kept to a high quality.
One of the biggest myths about aquarium fish is that bottom feeders do not contribute to the fish population. The truth is that while bottom feeders do help to keep the tank clean, they also consume oxygen and produce waste.
Damsels, or Anemone fish, are an excellent type of fish to keep in most saltwater aquariums. They are brightly colored, hardy, and do very well “breaking in” a new aquarium so as to establish nitrification cycles. Damsel fish get along fairly well with most other types of fish, and live to be about 10 years old.
