As a gynecologic oncologist I have the honor to take care of many women in difficult periods of their lifes. I enjoy the long term relationships with my patients that develop during preparation for surgery, postoperatively, during recovery, chemotherapy, and surveillance. I am fortunate to have a great team that help cover the different needs of each patient, as well as many clinical trials that provide access to new and exciting medications and techniques that would otherwise not be available.

I presented to Dr. Backes with stage four ovarian cancer. I was frightened and had so many questions about possible treatments and outcomes. She was kind but clear about what I was facing. She calmly and clearly answered all of my many questions. She guided me to the best possible treatments, surgery, and post care. Complete explanation of diagnosis and plan to treat it. Took a lot of time with me and encouraged me to ask questions. Her whole staff was also amazing, kind and made me very comfortable during a difficult time.
For my wife’s 3 week post-op office visit, Dr. Backes left a voicemail indicating that my wife could come in 2 hours early and be the first patient of the day. Upon check-in at the office, my wife witnessed other patients being called back to see Dr. Backes. According to the person at the front desk (who was audibly perturbed about the situation) Dr. Backes had called ALL of their patients herself, telling each of them the same thing?!? Selfish.
I would not recommend her. She seems constantly unprepared to handle any problems that might arise. I never feel she gives me all my options, only what she wants.
Due to insurance, which made me go to another hospital system, I did not get to stay with her. Dr Backes however went out of her way to help me. Caring, smart, confident.
Highly recommend Dr. Backes. She is caring and determined to navigate her patients for the best results possible. I have complete confidence in her and her team.
I wouldn’t recommend her. She treated me bad the first time I went there. She doesn’t have good bedside manner. She just started saying like do you know cancer lives on fat cells. When I was having lots of trouble with heavy bleeding all they would say there is nothing we can do. The nurse Elaine would never let me explain how much I was bleeding.
She is the perfect example of what I want and need in my Oncologist. It was a very difficult couple of years with my Stage III-C Ovarian Cancer but she has been there with her advice, concern, support and mostly knowledge every step of the way. It has now been 2 1/2 since I finished my Chemo treatments, andI am happy to report no evidence of any new cancer. A special thank you to Dr. Backes and all the nurses and staff that helped me along this journey.
