Kilauea's Fissure 8 (Ahu Aila'au) exploded in May of 2018, draining the caldera of lava in Halema'uma'u through it in a spectacular lava fountain reaching up to 300 feet in the air and down to the ocean. The most unique experience on the island. Highly recommend
This was the first thing we did as we got to the big island, and it set the perfect start to vacation. Melissa was very informative and knowledgeable about the fissures and what remains now. She took us at a good pace for our group and answered any questions we had, (even if we asked them twice HAHA). Towards the end of the tour she gave us great recommendations for the island for the rest of our trip and sent us off with the Ohana spirit. We had a private tour of Fissure 8. It felt like you were walking around on Mars. It was pretty awesome to be so close to active volcanoes.
Today we had a tour of Fissure 8 with Melissa and it was FANTASTIC. She has put in the time to educate herself about volcanoes and the chemistry and history of Fissure 8, which is literally in her backyard. She gave detailed explanations and ample time to absorb the wildness and beauty of this magnificent site.
