I'd suggest getting there as early as humanly possible to avoid the crowds from the city that come up by the bus loads.
Try Dolan's orchards near New Paltz. Its cheaper, the employees are friendlier, and they let you use the poles for picking higher on the tree.
Fun place, I love the smell of foods cooking on the Aztec grill. Gotta support the local farms!

DO NOT leave without trying the donuts. Best I've ever had. Buy a dozen, eat 3 right away, take the rest home.
The best cinnamon sugar apple cider doughnut I've ever had. If you put your face close enough to this photo you can feel their toasty sugary warmth.
The pies and donuts here are AMAZING!!!
