After the carpets were cleaned, there was a bad smell in house that was not there previously. Not sure if this is typical after a carpet cleaning (perhaps it pulls pet smells from the bottom of the carpet to the surface). to address the problem, i went back over the carpet with just a low-cost steam cleaner (without a shampoo) - it pulled out alot of dirt/pet hair.
