Food doesn't live up to the view. – Though Clay's clearly tries to look upscale, its food and wine was pedestrian. We went for happy hour, and happy hour tends to be a good barometer for the quality of the overall restaurant. A great happy hour, even when scaled down for price, still shows off the great flavors and range of the restaurant. Not so at Clay's. Healthy California fare in an upscale hotel with a panoramic view of La Jolla shores. – In Short Walk inside Hotel La Jolla, turn right and set the elevator for the 11th floor. Emerge to a stunning floor-to-ceiling view of the Pacific, elegant tables dressed with flowers and candles and possibly a jazz band or DJ playing in the corner. Look for the banana pancakes for breakfast, goat cheese salad for lunch, and sea bass or steak as dinner options. The drink menu offers 100 wines, mainly from Northern California.
