Let me save you the trouble— scheduling with Dr. Merkel is impossible. I have called several times in the span of over a month to contact the scheduler. I’ve left voicemails and messages with the office staff. YOU WILL NEVER REACH HER and therefore never get scheduled for any surgeries or vital appointments. I have had such bad experiences with other gynos/doctors (especially female), but Dr. Merkel is genuinely the best doctor I’ve ever had. He answers all of my questions and makes sure I feel comfortable with each visit. He never pushes me one way or another on decisions, just informs and supports whatever choice I ultimately make. My experience with Dr. Merkel was deeply distressing and has caused me lasting trauma. On day two of my induction at St. Joe’s in Ann Arbor, which was progressing great over night, he came in to perform a cervical exam. As he was putting on his gloves, he said, “Don’t worry, I’ll treat you just like my wife, and I like my wife.” This comment was highly inappropriate, unprofessional, and immediately made me uncomfortable.
