One of the fathers of modern pavements was Thomas Telford, a Scottish building mason. His engineering techniques and designs for road construction eventually became the norm and form the basis for modern roads today.
More than 100 million tons of asphalt are used annually worldwide. As reported by the Asphalt Institute, total sales of liquid asphalt paving products in the United States averaged nearly 30 million tons between 1999 and 2002. Approximately 90 percent of asphalt consumed in the United States is used for road paving and approximately 10 percent is used for roofing products.
The word asphalt comes from the Greek 'asphaltos,' which means secure. It is believed that the infant Moses' basket was lined with asphalt to make it waterproof.
The first recorded use of asphalt as a road-building material occurred in Babylon in 625 B.C. Around this time, the Romans also used asphalt to seal their baths, reservoirs, and aqueducts.
While cracks in your concrete or pavement are common, they shouldn't be ignored. When left on their own, these cracks will widen over time, resulting in water seepage and/or possibly a loss in structural integrity.
At the height of the Roman Empire, their road network consisted of over 62,000 miles of roads-almost the length of the entire interstate system in the U.S. Like the U.S., Rome delegated roadway maintenance to the inhabitants of individual districts.
Some of the oldest paved roads still in existence today were built by the Roman Empire. Mostly, these were constructed during Republican times. The oldest that still exists today, Via Appia, dates back to 312 BC.
