My experience was not what you'd expect. Most companies are always trying to sell you something. When I expressed to Josh (owner of Dry Coats painting) that I wanted to paint all my kitchen cabinets myself as a DIY sort of project, he didn't try to convince me to hire him to do it or try to make it seem impossible for me. He told me how easy it would be, even told me which paint/primer to use, what brush to use, how to do it, everything. He even helped me purchase the paint, saving me money.
