We got there early, doors still locked. Malik spotted us through the glass and unlocked it without a word. Let us sit in the cool, quiet chapel for a good 15 minutes before anyone else arrived. Old state—antsy, pacing. New—time to breathe before everything started.

I remember sitting in that little office for two hours ‘cause my cousin was late with the papers, but the woman at the front didn’t rush us out. They brought us water, gave my uncle an extra chair when he complained his back hurt. Simple things but it made the day feel less stiff. Didn’t expect any warmth but they actually had it.

Caribe Funeral Home is by far the most disappointing funeral service I've ever encountered. I'm attending my cousin's funeral right now, and the wake was a nightmare—there was no air conditioning. This morning, when we arrived for the service, we were informed that they didn’t have any pallbearers available, so we had to carry the casket ourselves into the church and then to the cemetery.
