I got to volunteer here in 2000, when I was a senior at Freeport high school. Doung Firebaugh had been my chemistry teacher my sophomore year, and I was taking astronomy. It used to be called the JETS Observatory, but when Doug Firebaugh left this world, it's name took his name in his stead. This is an amazing place! If highly recommend going to it. Bring kids; look at the sky.
Awesome place! 3rd most powerful telescope in Illinois, only stubbed by Chicago and UoI. Was able to see the rings of Saturn and Barbell Nebula.
WOW! We were lucky enough to be here during a Waxing Gibbons moon. Really bright. The observatory was packed with locals, volunteers and employees of the observatory. We got to look in all their cool gadgets and I saw Saturn’s rings for the first time!!! Big thanks to Pam and Jim all everyone else there. Very cool experience. Be sure to stop by if you ever come through Freeport, Il!
The tulips were pretty again this year!!
