This issue took several visits over a three week period. My gas water heater is the back up heater for a solar hot water system. When we had two days of really cold weather, we found out that the gas water heater was not automatically starting up. I started it manually and it worked fine. Our water heater had been in place for many years (over 20) and finally just gave out and started leaking all over the floor. We were able to purchase an Google Deal and get it scheduled very quickly. We knew enough to expect additional charges to meet building code changes that had happened in the last 20 years. When our hot water heater began spewing gunk, it was pretty obvious the end was near - even with a flushing and new anode I knew it was only a matter of time. So, with a new baby in the house, I decided we needed a new hot water heater and we needed it NOW. The plumber showed up, explained the service and what was going to be done and started by draining the sludge out of the hot water heater, then replacing six shut off valves and finally installing a new toilet I had purchased.
