DOR is flawed, and the counselors and team managers in this Berkeley location rigidly stand by their flawed regulations without any bit of advocacy. I think in order to be truly helpful to every kind of disability, their regulations need to be more flexible.
Zero help. Not worth the trouble. Funding would be better spent elsewhere. Once you're assigned a case manager, months after applying and doing the many humiliating and exhausting things they require in order to prove you're disabled and worthy of access to support services, be prepared to be talked down to, ignored, lied to and handed off to the land of leaving voice mail after voicemal because you'll be told that they're not receiving your emails and they definitely don't answer the phones, at least the case manager I was ... read more
The Berkeley DOR is like functionally dead because they have this guy Will running the place who is just a middle manager from the state trying to cut services to the office so the budget in Sacramento seems much smaller. I don't think the employees are very happy there and they can't approve or do anything anymore basically. I've been a client since 2014 and still broke and unemployed after 3 degrees. Honestly, the employees I’ve engaged with are incompetent and lazy. They are also extremely restrictive in what services they offer, even when they regulations allow for more flexibility. Their methods are outdated, they want physical copies of things that can be scanned. A counselor told me “dont want to aim too high…” when I shared my employment goal.
