Please note, the two reviews referring to CPS are not referring to our center. The reference is to the Center for Psychological Services at Columbia University. The Dean Hope Center is a training clinic where services are provided by doctoral students in a separate center located in Teachers College.
The testing library located in the Dean Hope Center is one of the most poorly managed places at Columbia. They close unexpectedly, staff are constantly late, and they do not reply to emails. If I did not have to interact here as a student, I would have not.
A friend of mine was encouraged by CPS to undergo a pyschiatric evaluation at Mt. Sinai Morningside due to depression. Once there, they were involuntarily committed for four days with no access to an interpreter (English is not their first language), and bullied by hospital staff. Upon securing their release, they spoke to their CPS counselor about how horrible their experience was, at which point the counselor recommended they go back. As a Columbia alum I can say it's general knowledge that CPS does not help students - I know so many people who have tried to go through this office during mental health crises only to be told there's a waiting list of 4 weeks. CPS was also not helpful from what I've seen in connecting students with resources they can access and afford. I had a great experience overall at Columbia but a school with such a stress culture and issues around mental health needs to be investing way more in these services.
