The Cottontail Observatory is located on 82 acres of private land about 3 miles ESE of the town of Twin Bridges, MT. Twin Bridges is about 30 miles south of interstate 90, Southeast of Butte, and about 26 miles south of Whitehall, exit 249. This is a DARK site at night. There is just the faintest glow on the Northwest horizon towards Butte. The few lights on the farms in the valley, about 2 miles away, are actually below the horizon from the site (elev. 5000 ft) and not really an issue. Joe hosted an impromptu New Years Eve star gazing party complete with hot coco and marshmallows that was phenomenal. He is a kind soul & a wonderful astronomer who passionate about sharing his knowledge of the heavenly bodies & astrological phenomena with others. Would give this rating as many stars as there are in the sky, 200 billion trillion Thanks for an informative evening of night sky appreciation Joe!
We enjoyed our time with Joe and Gwen and will return again to view the heavens with them again.
Wife and I and a friend/coworker drove up to this place the night of the last lunar eclipse. Although the sky had become overcast, and we could not see the moon, the experience was a friendly one. The owner of this observatory is a long time lover of astronomy, and that is obvious by how he has constructed his observatory at his own volition and cost. I hope to return there later this year when skies are clear and enjoy another visit with the owner.
