I applied for a writing gig and wrote them a 1,000-word test piece (which I normally do not do until I've had a human interview and know I'm on a short list). Since then, I've heard nada from them, yet they continue to advertise for writers. I've got a lot of writing experience and won awards, so I know my piece wasn't bad. I have encountered in the past some who solicit writing samples just to get free writing work but don't really have a position open. One has to wonder.
