I had to take a friend in to get a cyst checked out and he was in very minor pain. They thought 4mg of morphine was a 'starter dose' and gave him IV morphine without trying other painkillers first. For reference the hospital he was transferred to only gave him 2mg and that was after trying other less addictive painkillers. This is part of why the opioid crisis is still going on.
