I had just crossed over from Maine into Canada on a very long road trip when I decided I couldn't ignore the slow leak in one of my tires any more. Two prior tire stores in the USA (including the one that sold me the tires) told me that my problem was a leaky valve stem. Both places had replaced the stem, telling me that they'd honed out the hole, but the leak continued. I went in with a slow leak. They told me I needed a new tire because of the proximity to the sidewall. It was 3 1/2 inches away. I was then quoted a price for a new tire that was $130 above list price. The long term employees that we all know became uncomfortable and left the room. I instructed them to put the tire back on which they did reluctantly. I then went to another national franchised tire shop near by who said they was no issue with the proximity to the sidewall.
