As a recent graduate from NAS, I was fortunate enough to receive the Claypool Award last year. I think it was the best prize for me! As an emerging artist who works predominately with clay, I was given an empowering community to continue my practice with! Claypoolers are so friendly, the firing service is efficient and the glazes are beautiful!!! No matter if you are new to clay, a hardcore hobbiest or an experienced ceramic artist, Claypool can always offer you something you need =) !!
Having been a member for the last 3 years, I can say Claypool is a wealth of knowledge and the owners are extremely generous with sharing their ceramic processes. The glazes available are always topped up, and firing is quick so you gather momentum as a maker. They are happy to lend a helping hand, if you need items for an exhibition or show quickly. Saved me many times!
Claypool truly feels like my second home, and I can’t imagine my life in Sydney without it. The space is welcoming, creative, and inspiring, making it the perfect place to learn and grow. I had a studio here and I do not recommend to other ceramicists. I (and other members) repeatedly raised concerns about the serious risk of silicosis as members would often sand dry clay inside. No-one ever addressed these concerns, spoke to me about it, anything. Member/s continued to sand dry clay inside until the day I left. I was yelled at by one of the owners for doing things I saw other members doing - there's definitely a hierarchy when it comes to treatment and it's a very unwelcoming environment.
