On this occasion at Chez Bruce, our party was led past the buzzing, vibrant downstairs restaurant to a hot, stuffy and completely silent upstairs dining room with around five tables and zero atmosphere. A dependable south-west stalwart that trades on sheer familiarity. The set menu is reassuringly predictable: no wild surprises, just solid classical cooking where you know exactly what you signed up for. Front-of-house felt a bit uncharacteristically clunky on the last visit, but writing off an institution over one slightly sluggish service feels harsh. It remains a very decent, no-nonsense staple when you want a proper meal without trekking into Central.
Very disappointing experience, especially for a birthday celebration. We chose Chez Bruce because it is a Michelin-starred restaurant and expected excellent food, service and a special atmosphere. When making the reservation, we specifically mentioned that we were celebrating my wife’s birthday. Perfect
Not sure why it's taken us so long to visit this exceptional south London fine dining restaurant but the experience was very much worth the wait. The food and service were exemplary. The lobster ravioli, chateaubriand and (probably the best ever) cheeseboard were delicious and we're very much looking forward to returning again soon.
