The first non-native activity in the Keystone area of the Black Hills was the discovery of placer gold two miles east on Battle Creek in 1876, which led to the settlement of Harney City, named after Mount Harney. We visited Keystone in December 2022. We stopped at all three stores that were open. We fell in love with SD and the genuine wonderful people there. We ended up purchasing two leather jackets from Aura Gallery and Gold on Dec. 2 for a hefty amount and extra for shipping so we didn't have to fight them on the plane. Long story short, 20 days later and we still don't have them. And ironically there is no contact information online anywhere for this business. Vary nice stop
For a place that is so close to some of the most beautiful natural landscapes there is (The Black Hills, Custer State Park, Mount Rushmore, etc.) this place is unfortunately was an UNWELCOMING as it gets. We were treated terribly and shop owners refused us service. They made fun of us. Why? Because we were wearing masks to prevent the spread of diseases and viruses.
