Incredible engineering and an important relic of our not too distant past. An entire community survived and thrived from the labor needs created by the iron industry. The museum next door gets an A+ for history, geology, genealogy, physics, engineering, and storytelling to help illustrate the entire picture.
Its a short trail and at the end is a nice display of the slave names. Study the history before going then as you walk imagine yourself there. Feel the ground and the trees. It was emotional.
Very interesting place to visit, nice walking trail that goes over Rt 15. Informative boards along the way to describe how things were done. You can still see slag and slag mounds and bricks along the path. If you like learning about local history you should stop in and visit Catoctin Furnace. They have a Ironworks museum a log house on display and a walking trail that tells a story along the way. It's Informative it's also very sad to read about the slaves that worked and died there. The furnace is in great condition. The site is well maintained and the history very informative. I appreciate the focus on the slaves lives and their experience.
