History Established in 1924. In 1924 Benjamin T. Byrd, or "Pop" Byrd began selling his cookies to local apothecaries, delivering them in model-T trucks all around town. His son, BT Byrd, Jr., or "Cookie" Byrd as he was known opened our first retail store--The Cookie Shanty. In 1954 he developed the Benne Bit and the Benne Seed.
