My husband, myself, and our 5 year old ton took a trip yesterday and in one kayak. The water was flowing due to the dam having been released. We knew what we were getting into because it had been explained to us so there were no surprises. My husband and I have both kayaked in the past so we were confident in our abilities to navigate the water without a guide. My daughter and grandson almost drowned on this river this week. They were first time kayakers ' the group they were with were given instructions by a 12 yr old. The day started out good' however things quickly went badly when water was released from the dam. The water rose and became very fast moving. She was trying to get to the side of the river but ended up with the kayack flipping and her and her 6yr old went under. Decided to kayak when the dam releases water which is twice a Day. The river rises 4 feet and the river becomes a raids in some place but quite manageable. Water is super cold around 45 F so if you want to cool off.... The trips are 2 or 4 hours. We did the 2 hour trip and had a great time. Hardly any paddling required as the water is swift but again 4 ft deep. Paddle around a few tree limbs and we passed under 5 bridges. The recovery van was at the appointed location waiting on us.
