The Big Savage Tunnel will reopen March 25, 2026.
This is an awesome old train tunnel that is super long, super cold (felt great on the hot day we visited) and the view out of the tunnel heading to the mason-dixon line is stunning.
Oh this is a wonderful tunnel. Long. Cool. It takes you back to a different era. Very neat to ride through. And it connects two very different landscapes --- mountains on the east and alpine plateau on the west. Well worth the trip!
Riding through the tunnel was such a cool experience! I had no idea it was so long. We are thankful this section of the GAP has been preserved. We went in October on a Friday and we're the only ones in the tunnel both ways. It does get dark in the middle of the tunnel for those with little kids who may have a hard time navigating in the dark or who get scared but the overhead lights provide just enough to see well enough.
