About this business

Of the dozens of Italian restaurants that line Hanover Street in Boston's North End, this may be one of the friendliest. Small tables pack the tiny dining room where families come to celebrate. Traditional dishes include chicken ziti and broccoli; grilled veal and spinach; and lobster fra diavolo, the house specialty. Generous portions mean plenty of leftovers to enjoy later. The restaurant serves beer and wine.

As a Boston Resident.. – As a Boston resident I have eaten in many restaurants in the North End of which there are quite a few! However, when it comes to authentic Italian home-style cuisine Bella Vista is by far the best that I have experienced! The bolognese sauce is just to die for and I look forward to it every year when me and my fiance come here for our holiday dinner. The atmosphere is beautiful, and the room is lit dimly with twinkle lights and candles. If you are looking for a romantic dinner this is a great locatio... read more

Good food for a good price. – I was there once with my husband and another couple and two weeks later with a group of girls. Each time the food was wonderful and the house wine was not bad either. The waiter was pushy but we just ignored him. I had the mussels as my main dish and it was delicious and more than enough to share. My husband had the antipasti and it was fresh and also enough to share. The other couple and veal and chicken which they really liked. The hostess/owner(?) was rather surly but aren't we used to that b... read more

all around terrible! – I have never written a review on city search but i read them a lot. I went to this restaurant tonight with my fiance' for our anniversary. We were walking around the north end and just decided to go here...big mistake. It was awful, we waited in the doorway for a while before the woman came and seated us. We didn't get to far into the dinning room either. I pretty much sat in the doorway. I had the lovely view of a fire alarm to my right at eye level. I wish we left at this point, but we didn't. They t... read more

worst in boston – this is one of the worst restaurants in boston. the food is flat out terrible. moreover, the food is not authentic italian as they go so far as to place sandwich rolls with packaged butter on the table and serve pasta sauce out of a jar. true purveyors of fine food would scoff at this restaurant. out of all the other great restaurants in the north end, please heed my advice and leave this one out.

Unimpressive – I agree with most of the other reviews: the food is simply not worth the terrible service. I ordered the escarole soup which tasted good but had very little substance (broth, a few tortellinis and some escarole leaves floating around) and the manicotti which had the saltiest bolognese sauce I've ever tasted. The atmosphere was not that appealing and the place was very crowded. I also encountered the "manager" spoken of in other reviews and my impression was the same. When we got to the restaurant, she was stan... read more

Bella Vista = bad – Bella Vista in the North end was NOT GOOD. The staff were rude and increadibly stupid. This one man who was apparently our waiter gave me this insulting lecture about how I must have my salad plate on the right side and my napkin on my lap. He was very rude and when I refused to put my napkin on my lap he yelled at me. What kind of waiter has the right to tell me how I eat my food, and in a very mean way? My food was mediocre, the only really good thing was that it was cheap. When the rude waiter came bac... read more

Order Veal Pizzaiola...maybe avoid on Saturday nights... – I went here for the first time 14 years ago, and have returned every time I come back to Boston. It is a small, family restaurant, and such gets busy. I fell that the people that gave negative reviews don't understand the North End. For a small, busy place, I think the family does pretty darn well. Veal Pizzaiola is the best dish, fantastic red sauce, spiced just right... seems like the girls always get the Shrimp Scampi, and they always rave about it. Highly recomme... read more

Bad Vista – Although the food at Bella Vista is very delightful, the staff however are the most rude, miserable people I have ever met in my entire dining experience. I was appalled when we walked into the North End restaurant and were ignored by management, and then snapped at to stand outside. Once seated, the table was uncontrollably wobbling all over the place, the white wine tasted like water, and they only take cash or Amex, but don't tell you that until it's time to pay for dinner and you pull out the Visa. With that ... read more
